Nordictrack AudioStrider 990 eddy problem

I have the above eliptical, took the side off exposing the eddy mechanism and motor.  Metal on metal at times during rotation.  Eddy motor makes a noise when machine is not in use.  So, question is the motor bad or the mechanism?
